Bio
Kevin Hughes enters his second season at the helm of Fullerton College’s women’s indoor and beach volleyball programs, bringing with him an impressive résumé spanning nearly three decades of coaching at the high school, collegiate, and international levels.
A seasoned leader with 19 years of head coaching experience at the high school level, Hughes has compiled a 310-162 overall record, including 13 CIF playoff appearances, four semifinal runs, and three quarterfinal berths. He has developed 17 All-CIF honorees, 10 league MVPs, and over 70 All-League selections. At the collegiate level, he boasts 12 years of NCAA Division I and II assistant coaching experience, working with 10 All-Americans and two NCAA Players of the Year.
Hughes served as an assistant coach with the USA Women’s National and Olympic Teams during the 2009–2012 London Olympic quad, focusing on setting and serve receive development, while also contributing to training design and practice protocols. In addition to his national team involvement, Hughes has made a lasting impact at the youth club level with USA Volleyball, leading teams to multiple medals at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships and assisting in the advancement of more than 100 players to the collegiate ranks.
Prior to joining Fullerton College, Hughes completed his second stint as head coach at Mayfair High School in Lakewood, Calif., where he led the Monsoons to their first-ever CIF State Playoff appearance, reaching the 2023 State Regional Final. In his first tenure at Mayfair (1998–2003), the program achieved historic success with seven consecutive Suburban League championships and a perfect 80-0 league record. During that time, 28 players earned All-League honors and six received All-CIF recognition.
Hughes also served as head coach at Canyon High School (Anaheim, CA) from 2005–2009, leading the Comanches to three CIF playoff appearances and a 17-6 campaign in 2009. At Villa Park High School in 2012–2013, he guided the Spartans to a 26-5 season and the school’s first Century League title. That team produced the league MVP and four All-League selections, while advancing to the second round of the CIF playoffs.
Hughes’ collegiate coaching stops include Northern Michigan (1991–93), where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship match and the 1993 National Title; Rice University (1994–95); Cal State Dominguez Hills (1998–2000); Long Beach State (2004–06); Cal State Fullerton (2014–15); and UC Irvine (2015). At Long Beach State, Hughes was part of a staff that captured the Big West title and made consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Hughes earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in single-subject secondary English from National University and is on track to complete his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University in November 2025.
He and his wife Nancy have been married for 22 years and are proud parents to daughter Jillian, a collegiate volleyball student-athlete at William Paterson University.
