FOOTBALL: THE SCOREBOARD BROKE A SWEAT

The #3 Hornets hosted a tenacious #4 Golden West College squad on Saturday night lighting up the scoreboard with a 66-43 victory over the Rustlers in a Southern Conference duel.

Both teams entered the game with only one loss on their overall records with no losses in the southern conference, but it was Fullerton who came out on top in the middle of a race for the conference title.

The Hornet defense kept the Rustler offense in check throughout the first half as FC took a commanding 21-0 lead in the first quarter. By the end of the first half, the Hornets took full control of the game with a score of 35-6.

Rustler QB Chris d'Entremont came into the game with a staggering 16 touchdown passes and no interceptions. After facing Fullerton's defense tonight, d'Entremont threw his first interceptions (two in all) but also cut through FC to stay in the game with 5 TDs for 458 yards. Four of those touchdown passes were caught by WR Zimari Manning who burned the Hornet secondary for 296 yards on 7 catches. Manning scored his fifth TD of the game on an 82-yard kickoff return in which he broke through a gang of FC tacklers to pay dirt in the fourth quarter. d'Entremont's fifth touchdown pass was to Quest Truxton, a 25-yard pass with four minutes left in the game.

The Rustler passing game may have been hot in the second half, but their running game could only muster up 24 total yards against the Hornet D.

The Hornet offense looked as if they found their identity tonight as they could score at will against the GWC defense. The offense overall amassed 521 yards while QB Joey Verhaegh found his groove throwing 3 touchdown passes on 216 yards (20-30) with no interceptions. Verhaegh also rushed for 33 yards with a 1-yard plunge.

The FC running game was on point with 309 yards rushing with three running backs gaining over 70 yards. Khalil Wilson led the way with 114 yards on 13 carries with a TD. Alonzo Bennett had 15 carries for 75 yards and Oran Maxwell ran for 73 yards on 9 carries and two TDs.

Up Next: Fullerton (4-1, 2-0) will hit the road at #5 Riverside City College on Saturday, October 11th at Wheelock Stadium @ 6:00 pm.
