FOOTBALL: A KEY REBOUND WIN
After faltering at home against Riverside City College last week, the Hornets bounced back in a big way knocking off Santa Ana College 59-13 on the road in the 97th Key to the County Game.
It was the 97th time in the last 103 years that the Dons of Santa Ana and the Hornets of Fullerton have met, and Fullerton did not pull any punches breaking the series record for most official points scored at 59.
Fullerton kicker Alec Fonseca delivered a pooch kick to start the game and the Hornets wound up with the ball. They took the ball down the field scoring in the 13th minute on a 14-yard pass to the back of the end zone from Quinn Commans to Kailan Noseff.
Fullerton tried another short-kick, and this time Santa Ana took over at the FC 40-yardline and ended the drive with a 33-yard field goal by Nathan Romo.
Noseff struck again at the 2:51 mark in the first quarter catching a 17 yard pass from Cooper Callis. He broke a tackle and took the ball 10 yards to the house.
With 19.6 seconds left in the first quarter Commans found a wide open tight end Spencer Owens for a 28-yard TD strike.
Near the beginning of the second quarter Michael Noble picked up a Don fumble at the 50-yardline and rumbled down to the SAC 15. Three plays later, Alec Fonseca chipped in a 33-yard field goal putting Fullerton up 24-3.
Santa Ana scored their first and only touchdown at 8:11 after a couple of late-hit penalties on the quarterback that put them on the FC 8-yardline. On the next play, Don QB Cross Faleoti hit Tyler Shimomura between the numbers on a hitch in the end zone.
On their next series, the Hornets drove the ball down to the Don 4-yardline and scored on a fourth and goal TD from Krishtjan Frrokaj for Noseff's third touchdown catch on the night.
Both teams went into their respective locker rooms at the end of the first half with Fullerton up 31-10.
The second half opened up with a bang when FC's Kashan Griffin took the kickoff 97 yards to paydirt. After dancing past a few Don Defenders, Griffin displayed his raw speed as he broke loose down the middle of the field.
Cooper Callis bumped the score to 45-10 on a 34-yard scamper at 5:32 in the third quarter. From there, the Hornets controlled the remainder of the game for their 50th win in the historic series (50-43-4 overall).
Kailan Noseff had quite a night for the Hornets catching three touchdown passes by three different quarterbacks for 45 yards. He totaled 3 catches. On defense, Josh Tarango had 6 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
Up Next: The Hornets (2-1 overall) will look to keep the wins coming next Saturday, September 28th when they host Southwestern College at Yorba Linda High's Nathan Shapell Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
