The No. 16 Hornets paid a visit to Grossmont College on Saturday afternoon and shut out the Griffins 44-0.
Palomar and Fullerton's history goes back to Coach Hal Sherbeck's second year when the Hornets first beat the Griffins 22-0 to open the 1962 season. For the all-time series, FC now owns a 23-5 record over Grossmont.
Fullerton got off to a quick start scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter for a 24-0 lead. Perry Willams IV blocked a punt on the Griffin five-yard line and Jeremy Naborne snatched it out of the air in the endzone for FC's first score at 12:31. Tobey Schmidt scored the next TD on a pretty 39-yard run to the endzone, and Schmidt struck again on a 32-yard touchdown skinny-post to wideout Jabre Bevineau at 5:51. With 1:19 left in the quarter, Charles Viorel knocked down a field goal from 44-yards out handing the Hornets a strong lead heading into the second quarter.
Fullerton scored at 11:26 in the second quarter on another pass (16 yards) from Tobey Schmidt to Jabre Bevineau, who broke a tackle at the 5-yardline and bounced across the goal line for the touchdown. The Hornets went up 38-0 on a 54-yard pass from Schmidt to K'Vion Bills at 9:45.
Up by a large margin going into the third quarter, both teams ran the ball burning the clock, but with two minutes left in the quarter, Grossmont attempted a field goal from 28 yards out. It was subsequently blocked by Jeremy Naborne and then picked up by Bryant Meredith, who took it to the house for a 65-yard touchdown return. Winning big 44-0, the Hornets simply ran out the rest of the clock earning their third shutout victory of the season.
The Hornet defensive unit was impressive holding Grossmont to a total of 14 yards rushing and 103 yards passing.
