SUPER DUPER! HORNETS SWEEP MT. SAC
The Hornets will be playing in the 3C2A Super Regionals this weekend after knocking off Mt. SAC in two straight games 2-0 and 3-0.
It only took 5 runs for last season's state champs to keep the fire lit during another playoff run. No. 10 Fullerton (19-21 overall) had a big mountain to climb against the No. 7 Mounties (26-15) and topped it in shutout fashion. It was a team effort for the Hornets with pitcher Grace Workman doing a wonderful job in the circle holding Mt. SAC to zero runs to complete the series.
The victory propels FC to the Super Regionals where the team will face a familiar foe in Orange Empire Conference Champion No. 1 Orange Coast College (30-7). Other OEC teams that will advance to the next round are No. 2 Cypress and No. 8 Saddleback. The Chargers swept past No. 15 Ventura, and the Bobcats beat No. 9 Antelope Valley in two straight.
In the first game on Friday, Fullerton pulled off a 2-0 win with strong defense and pitching. The Hornets gave Grace Workman all the run support she would need in the top of the first when Veronica Moore launched a solo home run to center field, putting Fullerton up 1-0 early. Two innings later, Jianna Lopez delivered an RBI single that brought in Hope Morales to make it 2-0. Although Mt. SAC out-hit Fullerton 9-3, they couldn't get past Workman when it mattered most. The Mounties stranded multiple runners in the later innings, but Workman never blinked. The Mounties' closest threat came in the sixth when they put two runners on with one out, but a groundout and pop-up ended the inning.
In game two on Saturday, the Hornets shutout the Mounties 3-0. Grace Workman tossed a gem in this one allowing just 2 hits and a walk while striking out one to keep Mt. SAC off balance. Fullerton busted up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Hope Morales delivered a clutch RBI single that bought in Milene Mendoza. In the sixth, FC added an insurance blast from Lisa Villanueva, who launched a two-run homer to deep left that scored Brooklyn Evans for a 3-0 advantage. The Hornet defense backed Workman with flawless play, and the win marked a statement shutout against a strong Mt. SAC squad.
