BASKETBALL: HORNETS READ TO CHILDREN

Being a student athlete is more than just academics and practice. This past Saturday Fullerton College athletes took time out of their busy schedule to give back to the community.

The Hornets attended the 12th annual Literacy Fair. The event was held in Las Lomas elementary school in La Habra, California. This is an event were student athletes read to children whose age ranges from three to seven years old.

The event has become more popular with the parents as the years have passed, and this year the attendance of children participating in the event was close to 500.

"I thought it would be great if we could get some of the FC athletes to read to the children. So, I reached out to the FC Athletic Department to see if we could make it happen" said Jay Seidel Chairperson of the La Habra Reading Festival and Fullerton Colleges own Journalism Professor/ Media Advisor. 

"It was awesome to watch our student athletes read and interact with the children. The children loved them and the parents commented on how great it was that our athletes gave up their Saturday morning to read to their kids. It was a fun experience and I am trying to find more ways for our students athletes to be involved in our community", said Briana Whitaker P.E. Division representative. 

Some of the Fullerton College athletes who attended the event were Tristian Johns who started off reading "What Mommy's Do Best". Melodey Thomsen followed by reading "A Home For Polar Bear", and Lyneya Turner first book choice was "Bobs Halloween Party". They represent women's basketball at the event. Dylan Banks represented men's basketball and the first book he read to the children was, "The Cat In The Hat".  In addition, a variety of books were read to the children including several classics from Dr. Suess.
