WHAT A SEASON FOR THE NATIONAL HORNETS!
The No. 8 seeded Hornets had a big three-day run in Wichita, Kansas this week winning two out of three matches at the WCLA National Championships.
In the first match on Wednesday, Fullerton took on No. 9 University of Denver and lost a tough one 18-10 after having an 8-6 lead at halftime. The loss hurt the Hornet's chances of winning it all as they fell into the Consolation Bracket. On Thursday, Fullerton faced off with No. 11 Drury University and won big 17-6. In the final game on Friday, the Hornets played No. 10 Florida Gulf Coast University and edged out the Eagles 12-10. The victory netted Fullerton a 9th place finish in the Division 2 tournament. Not a bad finish for the only community college that competed in the tournament. Winning it all was No. 1 Cal State San Marcos, who defeated No. 6 Montana State in the title game 17-5.
It had been quite a ride for these Hornets as the team finished with a 10-5 record and played very well in two post-season tournaments. Placing 6th overall in the Western Women's Lacrosse League (WWLL) Championship Tournament handed FC the bid for the WCLA National Championships where the team finished 9th in the country.
This is the first time in Fullerton College history where a team traveled out of state to play in a game with national implications. The last time a Hornet team played in a game with a national title on the line was in 1965- Hal Sherbeck's football team beat Henderson, Texas in the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Awards were had with Brooklynn Peters, Robin Gaudette and Aliyah Ortega earning WWLL All-League honors. More awards were handed out as Kealia Amorin, Victoria Lupotti, Brooklynn Peters, and Robin Gaudette worked hard in the classroom earning Academic All-American Honors.
