WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: SOCAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A SoCal Champion and School Record were had at the Southern California Regional Track and Field Championships!

The Southern California Track and Field Regional Championships were held on Saturday, May 9th at Cerritos College. The ladies finished in 15 place (21 points) out of 23 teams.

Fanny Giron won the 400 meter race with a huge personal record of 56.24. It came down to the end as she squeaked out the win before Doshwn Franks of West Los Angeles 56.27 and Jhaylen Ball of Mt. SAC running 56.33.

"I knew I had to run my race and I did" said Giron.

Andrea Mendez had a big day as well claiming a new school record in the 1500M. The race was fast and she had a big personal record running 4:46.85 breaking the FC school record by two seconds previously held by Jeanelle Goonetilleke record of 4:48.54 in 2003. Andrea finished in 8th place in this event and qualifies for the state meet. She was also entered to run in the 800M and finished in 8th place again a few seconds off her best time of the season with a 2:23.18 effort. That was the fourth school record that fell this season for the Hornets.

Jasmine Williams competed in the high jump and jumped 4'10" and finished in 8th place. Samantha Duong had an unfortunate event and false started in the 400M hurdle.

Samantha claimed, "I will be back next year and fired up to run even more".

These events can happen and it is the part about the sport that is unfair. We take the loss and move onward.

On to state: Jasmine Williams competed in the SoCal Heptathlon back in April and was runner up qualifying her for the State Heptathlon Championships to be competed at College of San Mateo May 15-16th starting at 10:00 a.m. Fanny Giron and Andrea Mendez will be joining her for the trip up as well to compete in the 400 meter race and the 1500M.
