WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: MAKING STRIDES

The Lady Hornets opened up their conference season at Saddleback College this past Friday.

The throwing events started the day off with Samantha Duong finishing second overall with a throw of 81 feet 5 inches in the javelin. This was her first time in this event. "I did not expect that, I surprised myself", claimed Duong.

Madison Fitzpatrick was second for the Hornets throwing only a few feet off of her best throw from her previous meet at 75'3".

Amber Hernandez had an improvement with her throw of 71'11".

The throwers continued their strength sweeping the hammer and the shot put events. In the hammer, Amber Hernandez won it at 107'5" as teammate Cydney Chavers was right behind with 106'2" throw. Madison Fitzpatrick had her best of the day with 97'9" and won the shot put event with a throw of 34'5". Cydney Chavers won the discus with not her best throw of the season of 100'9" and took second in the shot put with 31'6". Amber Hernandez claimed third in the shot put with 24'6".

On the track, Belen Gonzalez ran the 1500 meters in 5:13.74 and Kim Flores finished the same race with a 5:33.88 effort. Belen ran the 800 meters in 2:37.52 and finished her day with the 3K in 12:10.04.

In the sprinting events, Duong showed her strength in the 400 meters running for second place of 1:00.46. Teammate Jasmine Mendoza ran 1:03.51 for fourth place (Penny Barnes-OCC ran 1:03.30) and that is a good early mark for her season opener. She finished off with 200 meters for her competition day with 27.94.

The 200 meters was a race to the finish line with OCC's Celine Smith winning it in 26.22 and Taylor Sims 26.65 was second and Duong finished third in 26.94.

"I liked what I was seeing in this meet. It is just the beginning and good things will prosper as the season unravels", Head Coach Gina Bevec.
