GOING THE DISTANCE

The FC women's volleyball team brought down the Bobcats of Saddleback College in five sets at home Wednesday night.

It was a good conference win for the Hornets, who were swept 3-0 at Saddleback a few weeks ago. This Fullerton squad still has some fight in them with five matches left in the regular season.

The first set was close with both teams fighting for momentum. With the score knotted up at 15-15, FC went on a 5-0 run to take control of the set before winning 25-18.

Fullerton fell behind early in the second set 11-6 but battled back to tie it up at 20 apiece. Anne Mayfield's kill off the right side put FC up 21-20, and a Bobcat error pushed the score to 22-20. From there, the Hornets could only muster one more point for the set and lost it 25-23.

In the third set, FC's Kori Burke had a nice kill in the middle of the court lifting her team to a 5-2 lead. Midway though the set Fullerton struggled as the Bobcats took off on a 4-0 run to go up 19-15. Down 23-20, the Hornets began to climb back in it thanks to Camille Castillo's kill. Fullerton flipped it on Saddleback holding them to a point eventually winning the set 24-26.

After going up early with a 7-2 lead, the Hornets had their hands full in the fourth set. Despite holding a 3-point edge throughout most of the game, Saddleback did not go away pulling off the 32-30 win forcing a fifth set.

The Hornets stumbled early in the 5th set as the Bobcats snuck a 3-0 advantage. Undeterred, FC swung it back in its favor going on a 6-0 run that was capped off by an ace by Amelia Hahs. From there, Fullerton ran the table earning a 10-15 win, taking the set and the match.

Anne Mayfield had one of her best matches as a Hornets with a game-high 17 kills, with 19 assists, 7 block assists, and 10 digs. Mareta Poe also had an impressive night with 16 kills, while Camille Castillo hammered down 11. Jade McIntyre added 6 kills, and Kori Burke had 5. Maile Grace Tabon had 17 digs, while Amelia Hahs (30 assists) and Elizabeth Perez had 15 each. Samantha Martinez added 14 digs to the stat sheet.
