Under the guidance of new head coach Kevin Hitt and assistant coach Haley Flanagan, the Fullerton College women's volleyball team swept through Compton College at home Friday night to open up the 2024 season.
With the win, the Hornets are already halfway there to matching last season's win record as the 2023 FC squad could only muster two victories. The last time the program won a game was last November 1st, which was a 3-1 road-victory against Santiago Canyon.
In the first set of the match, FC pulled ahead 17-9 thanks to a nice block by Bri Stotmore, but Compton fought its way back to pull within two at 19-21. Maintaining a 20-23 edge, Stotmore hammered down a kill and Jessica Timmins' ace sealed the set for Fullerton 25-20. The second set was a close one as both the Tartars and Hornets battled it out with Compton grabbing a 21-18 lead. Another kill by Stotmore, a great serve by Emma Orrell, and great set fake over the net by Izzy Hernandez tied the game up 21-21. With a 24-22 lead, the Hornets wrapped up the set 25-22 on a Tartar service error that sailed into the middle of the net. The third and final set was tied 13-13, but the Hornets scored the next three points on a Compton service error, a Bri Stotmore kill, and a kill by Jessica Timmins. Fullerton never relinquished the lead winning the set and match 25-21. The final point was won on a great rally that was finished off by another Stotmore kill.
Up Next: The Hornets (1-0 overall) will hit the road next Friday, August 30th when they travel to College of the Desert for a three-way. Game one against COD is at 12:00 pm with game two against Moorpark at 2:00 pm.
